Anti-Tarnish Packaging

925 Sterling Silver is prone to tarnishing.

The packaging can accelerate the tarnishing process by releasing gases that react with the metal and tarnish aka erode the metal.

Here is our guide to avoid this happening with your jewelry.

How to produce packaging that won't tarnish your jewelry.

  • Source It.

You need to be extremely careful about what materials you use in the packaging.
As brands move away from plastic and use more recycled materials, the exact ingredients of the materials are unknown.

Sulphur in particular can rapidly increase the on-set of tarnishing. Materials used should have low levels of releasable sulphur.

The challenge is that its impossible to know from even one batch of materials how much sulphur is in every single component.

Therefore, its essential to use materials that are sourced and manufactured in a consistent, quality controlled environment.

At Wrapology we import our materials from particular sources that are tried and tested.

And if we introduce new materials, they go through a thorough testing to mitigate the risk of tarnishing.

  • Test It.

We have our own in-house lab where we test our materials.

In addition we have tested over 500+ materials in a 3rd party lab to find out what materials accelerate the tarnishing process.

The lab is used by major global brands to verify whether the materials are safe to use with jewelry.

We test every single material that we use on the mass production from the glue, the paper, the board - even the ink is tested.

The lab reports can be shared with brands.

  • Store It.

    Whilst we do everythingto avoid the risk of the packaging tarnishing the jewelry, we still advise the following to brands;

    1. Jewelry should ideally be stored in a well ventilated area or in a very air-tight area (e.g. a zip-loc plastic bag). Even Ikea wardrobes can accelerate tarnishing as the MDF has chemicals which are released over time that react with the metal. We do not recommend storing jewelry in a greyboard box for a long period of time.

    2. Plastic is a much more stable material than greyboard or cotton. Therefore, if you are using a sustainable material, you do need to advise your customer about point 1 (above).

    3. Some fabrics can have anti-tarnishing chemicals added to them. We do also provide this material but it can also (over time) remove the plating.
